recipe for croutons

Super easy recipe and a great way to use aging bread. If your family’s not fond of the first and last piece of the loaf, just throw those into a baggie in the freezer until you’ve accumulated about a loaf of bread. My Dad’s infamous for going to the day-old bread store and coming home with WAY too much bread. He gives me extra loaves and I toss them into the freezer until I can get around to making croutons.

Preheat oven to 250 degrees

Cube approximately 1 loaf of bread
Layer the cut bread on a cookie sheet

Mix together:
1 package of Italian dressing mix
1 stick of melted butter
enough oil to make 1 cup

Pour the liquid mixture over the cubed bread

Mix with your hands on the cookie sheet

Bake at 250 degrees for approximately one hour

Hints:
Turn them every once in awhile
Bake them in the middle of the oven – not too close to the bottom burner

There are numerous things you can probably imagine adding to the recipe….

You can bag some of them and throw the rest in the freezer for a later time.
